Battleship from First Water

This is my second hike up to Battleship this month! I was asked by a hiking buddy who has never made the hike up to come along on a hike. It’s always a pleasure to do this one.

Earlier this month, I went up via Canyon Lake Trailhead. That is more scenic, but adds on about 1000+ ft of elevation. I opted for the speedier First Water route this time.

We started at 730am. We got the tail-end of a nice sunrise. The skies were mostly cloudy and it was a little chilly at the start. Second Water Trail was the usual up and down. Not a drop of water to be seen at the start.

When we started hiking down towards Boulder Creek, we did see a few pools. We found a dead fox near the trees. I wonder if this poor critter succumbed to rabies. He looked like he was healthy when he died. Poor little fox ☹.

The crisscrossing at Boulder Creek was uneventful and it was also as dry as a bone. The hike up to the saddle is now a regular trail, well cairned and easy to follow.

I was with three hikers that have never been up here. I think they were glad I came along….ha ha. The first time I did this one, it was alone, without a gps track or a clue what to expect. My shoes and socks were completely drenched from the water flowing in the creek on the way up! Needless to say, it took some trial and error, lots of cliffing out and some scary moments. Now, I know the path really well.

The hike up was smooth and everyone really enjoyed the amazing views from this cool hike. The trip down was nice and everyone made it in one piece.

We saw no hikers on the mountain, but passed a few parties on the way up along Second Water. As we approached the trailhead, we started seeing more hikers enjoying the lovely weather.

See you again, Battleship!
