Its been awhile since I visited one of my favorite destinations in the Supes, La Barge Box. This was my first attempt coming from Canyon Lake TH. Previously, I have taken the longer, but in my opinion, faster route from First Water TH. The 1.5 mile no-trail boulder hopping up and down La Barge is slow and tedious, yet beautiful and scenic.

Made the trip with my son Justin and good friend, Brian. The trail section (about 3 miles) long moves along pretty quickly. The trail is in good condition. It's not until you reach the creek, that the boulder hopping starts. You can make this a wet hike and probably speed things up a bit by stomping along in the water. Its actually kind of fun though, trying to stay dry, looking ahead, and navigating the series of steps to take as you criss cross your way back and forth across the creek. It took us about 3 hours to get to the Box as we took our time stopping for photos and searching for gold.

The Box area is always a welcome sight. The water was flowing strong. Deep pools of cold water await those daring to jump in. I'm sure I'm not the first to say, if only it was like this in June. I'm sure the pools start getting pretty green, shallow and murky by then. This would be quite the grueling hike to accomplish mid-summer. Probably not recommended for most.

We enjoyed the Box area for about half an hour then returned the same way. Our group of three was motivated to wrap up the hike in a timely fashion. It took us 2hrs, 15 minutes from the Box back to Canyon Lake with a mixture of walking and running on the return.
