There wasn't much confidence in the forecast models, but I decided that Tuesday would be good even if only a few inches of new snow fell. As things came together I decided I had to get up there Monday night to avoid a really slow and snowy drive Tuesday morning. Woke up to 16" in town and more on the hill.
One of the chair lift rides featured a guy who was calculating the odds: a once in ~ten years snowpack plus a once in ~five times per season storm of 20"+. The result was a pretty spectacular day. Low winds and light snow all day. Flagstaff closed school and NAU canceled morning classes. Even so there were no lift lines and fresh tracks even on the last run of the day.
I had contemplated hiking to Agassiz and skiing down the bowl, but all the new snow had closed access due to avalanche danger. Maybe next time. |
