Previously had accessed some of the bike trails between Kings Ranch Road and Peralta Road by parking at the old Apacheland studio. This private land is now fenced off with barbed wire and additional threatening private property signage. Reportedly vehicles have been ticketed and towed from the shoulder on Kings Ranch Road, apparently the ATV traffic became tiresome for the property owners. Moving on decided to park at the Cloudview east end trailhead for Hieroglyphic Canyon. Headed off to the south outside but along the parking lot fence on a trail with signage that says unauthorized trail not county maintained, since I have a state trust land permit I continued on. Wanted to get to the gate for the state trust land I had previously used leaving from Apacheland. After a little more than a mile arrived there. The gate is not padlocked but there is a guard bear and additional private property signage, will try to post pictures. From there started north east to intersect the Goldmine trail near the base of peak 2822,it reminds me of a ship that's sinking stern first , too much time in the Navy maybe. The bike trails do not have a lot of signage but believe I was on the Gold Canyon DT bike trail. This trail passes a cement trough and a metal pole with a small boulder perched on top? In the wash below the rock flag is some smooth rock with some small water pools. Before arriving at the Goldmine trail intersection had a relatively close encounter with an angry diamondback started walking closer to the center of the trail/road after this. Proceeded a little past the base of 2822 to get a better look at the caves and rock formations on that part of the mountain. Had previously been up to the 2822 peak and there is lots of cholla cactus to avoid and there were bee issues even at the end of December the view is good however. Once on Goldmine trail it was smooth sailing to the trailhead saw 3 bikers and 2 hikers so not very busy. Small patches of Mexican poppies along Goldmine trail. The parking lot was so busy would assume most everyone was going to the petroglyphs. This was a good hike to avoid the crowds. |
