We decided to begin at Blue Point trailhead this time. We drove through the gate about a mile to begin our hike along the Salt River. We walked under the power lines then worked our way to a horse trail that lead us toward Gateway Canyon. As we approached Gateway pass, we turned to the west to enter Rhyodacite Canyon. We were impressed with the rugged beauty of the canyon finding the carcass of a Desert Sheep, multiple caves and arches. We found an arch we thought might be Overlook arch, but coordinates didn't match the Tenny book. We continued until we entered the wash leading to Golden Dome Mountain, where we saw the Westward Arch. We then worked our way back to the North and Gateway pass. We stopped at Delicate Arch before moving down Gateway Pass and the Salt River. This was a tough hike with lots of catsclaw and huge boulders to negotiate. You have to do it to discover the beauty of Rhyodacite Canyon. I can imagine the beauty if the Brittlebush were in bloom. |
