| no partners | | | I apologize for the big dust-bunny spot in the middle of the pictures; maybe I should check the camera ... Anyway, this is the reverse of a hike posted by astrobrewer. I had this crazy idea that I wanted to hike up National from the very bottom, not from where Bursera goes up to meet it. So I kept following Gila until almost to the new housing development, then took the connecting trail over to National. Nice peaceful valley back there with plenty of palo verdes blooming. Everything else, though, is definitely brown now as johnlp said. When I got to the last saddle before dropping down toward San Juan road, I didn't know that National was just a short way to the east on that same saddle. So I went down ... and then met National, and went back up to the same saddle. At least I truly did start it from the bottom (though not from its start over by San Juan lookout; don't need a couple of miles of flat desert). And then -- yeah, there's kind of some long hills going up that west part of National! But the views get better and better. Eliminator was as far as I could go time-wise that day, so I made that nice quick trip DOWN. Beautiful morning out, with no sign of wildlife except lizards and a hawk that I saw close by. |
