I keep my hiking gear with me so I figured I would try one of the short loop trails along the Ortega Highway (74) in the Cleveland national Park. The San Juan Loop Trail is a short 2.3 mile loop that drops down into the San Juan Creek and follows along the creek and one of it's tributaries before going back up to the trail head. With the good amount of rain they had this year the creek was running pretty good. Later in the year this will be dry. I was always impressed by the size of the oak trees in the Cleveland National forest and this place holds up to the reputation. While here I also checked out the other trails in the area and there are quite a few, so that next time I drive here I can plan maybe some longer hikes. Like a lot of areas in Arizona these coastal ranges dry up in late Spring or early summer, depending on what kind of winter they had. When driving to California I like driving at night to avoid traffic, then hide out in the Cleveland National Forest until the Morning rush traffic along I-5 clears a bit. This is a great time to put in a few hours hiking. So if you are on your'e way to Cali, drive at night and unwind with a hike. |
