Not too much traffic on the trail. The Hawaiian Mist falls were more like the Hawaiian Missed falls, and the Big Kahuna falls were more like the Trickling Kahuna Falls, but we didn't expect much more than that this time of year.
We hiked all the way to the junction with the Mazatzal Divide Trail just to say that we'd done it, though that's not much of a destination in and of itself. If I were to do this as a destination hike in the future, I'd probably turn around at the high point before you cross over into the "interior" of the mountain range (about .5 mi. beyond Kahuna Falls).
On our way back, we had the most excitement of the day, when we ran across a bear. As we were headed down one side of a ravine, the bear was on the other side. When he/she heard us, he bolted down the trail. I was a little slow on the draw with my camera, but managed to get a somewhat blurry shot of him. As the direction of his bolting was the same direction of our travel, we were a bit cautious of the next 1/2 mi. or so, knowing that we may cross paths again. (Un?)fortunately, we didn't see him again. So, first bear sighting in the wild -- check! (Still waiting on my first Gila Monster encounter ....). |
