Legal access can be achieved by taking the Willard Springs Exit to FR 253 and then turn on FR 580 and follow that to any preferred spot closer to the canyons head.
Once I made it into the canyon I was soon greeted with an annoying amount of boulder hopping and rather dense vegetation.
Water was stagnant at first but after a 3/4 of a mile it began to flow at a trickle.
Perhaps the most surprising part was the deep perennial pools that actually boasted quite a bit of life complete with small fish, frogs and all sorts of little critters.
I had this trip on my agenda for quite some time, had a detailed map created months prior, read all the triplogs from this site and even other websites but nowhere did I ever hear about a full blown wall to wall swimmer???
My determined quick pace soon came to a halt when I was met with a full blown forty yard long pool!
I know the terrain in canyons can change drastically due to flooding as seen with the "wall to wall" area right above the Big Dipper that's no longer an issue the past couple of years.
So I'm wondering if flood debris from this past year has shifted the water positioning in this canyon, I'm aware Toddak is Spider-Man so maybe he bypassed this somehow but the I've read of other "normal" hikers that made their way past this point as well so it leaves me puzzled. 
I backtracked to a weakpoint in the small vertical cliffsides and went straight up until back on the very scenic rim.
I had a proposed emergency exit/entry just before the drainage where the powerlines run across Munds Canyon so that's where I was headed.
While walking across the gentle open flatlands I was greeted with unique and stunning views of Wilson Mountains north eastern side clear in sight the entire time.
Once making it to the canyons mid-section I realized it looked like too much work to go down and back up, it can be definitely be done be it would be a very steep miserable bushwhack.
There is a very scenic vista right at that rim midpoint and would make a nice sunset spot, somebody even strangely placed a set of 6 solar decorative landscape lights there minus the bulbs.
I debated on heading to Thompson Point but at the last minute had some random idea of setting up for sunset at Morman Lake so I looped it back to my SUV and the hike was concluded. |
