On satellite I spotted the remains of an old trail near Black Mesa that leads down to the river.
Upon arrival I found two pipes with some old cables that lead from the top of the mesa all the way down to the river, very interesting stuff, perhaps old mining equipment?
It's 900ft of elevation change in 7/10ths of a mile so the engineering of this pipe system is certainly impressive because it was a sweat hiking up and down alongside of it.
Once at the river bottom I checked out the old and new shack near the river which I assume possess water pump equipment of some sort.
There was also an old stone tank, corral and a cabin that I forgot to visit after being distracted by a large angry rattler.
Found some flowing water and enjoyed a beverage before making the hearty climb out.
While taking a quick break on the way up a baby rattler no more than 8 inches long almost gently slithered over my hand as I sat in the tall grass.
Finished the day out taking a few photos on Black Mesa and was back home under an hour!
A fun close to home exploratory hike! |
