| no partners | | Very nice to be back on Humphrey, not just for the hike I've beaten to death, but for the sensory experiences. Lots of birds on the trail, with a gaggle(?) of vociferous Clark's Nutcrackers sounding very angry at the end of the switchback before you traverse to the saddle area, plus all the other ones including both types of lovely thrush species. Also, the smells of the forest were pretty noticeable, primarily spruce/fir, but also something floral in the aspen, and then the aspens, too. Caught a hint of tundra plants, it's distinctive, but the wind tends to carry that away. Even with the highly reduced visibility from haze, smoke, or whatever (it had no odor I could detect) the air seemed clean. Not very windy, either!
Had the summit to myself for about 12 minutes, and celebrated the mild weather in my own highly appropriate fashion. After people arrived, it was never more than 2 or 3 others for the 50 minutes on top. There are still a few areas of trail obstructing dead and down, and the last long switchback is dominated by snow drifts. Slows you down a little, but it can be done. Then again, waiting a couple of weeks should have that virtually gone. |

Wildflowers Observation Isolated Mostly small Avens in the tundra. Smelled something floral in the aspen, but didn't see anything. Nothing yet on the ski run, but the Utah Stewartia is growing fast. |
