After a busy two weeks of hitting the books hard for midterms, I was looking to hit it hard on the trails. I picked 2 trails off my wishlist that fit the profile and went for it. On Friday, after finishing up the final TODOs for the week at ASU, I left school, did a quick Camelback warm-up hike, and then headed for Flagstaff.

I slept along the forest road Friday night, and hit the TH early Saturday morning. I caught an amazing sunrise on the drive in.

When I showed up around 6:30AM there were only 2 cars at the TH. I passed the first group of people within the first half mile, and the 2nd group just as you enter "the inner basin." After that I was by myself all the way to the first saddle, where I ran into a couple of backpackers on their way out.

I had mixed feelings about the hike for a little while. The aspen grove from the TH to the road is superb, especially when it is lit up gold. From "the inner basin" to the first saddle was just ok in my opinion.

The tundra walk along Weatherford is top notch, and makes this route a much more scenic alternative to the standard summit route. On my way up I couldn't see much because I was in the clouds most of the time, but on the way back I caught some great views of this area. The craggy rocks and scree slopes had me reminiscing about parts of the San Juan's which have this same kind of look.

On the way back, after making it below treeline again and passing the saddle, I started to hit a trickle of people. This trickle started slow, but by the time I hit "the inner basin" again, there were loads of people. There had to of been over 50 vehicles parked in the area when I got back to the TH. I didn't really think about it when I chose this hike, but it didn't matter much anyway because I got my alone time on the way up.

This route is a great way to add a little extra challenge to a Humphrey summit (compared to the standard route). I think next time I will try Weatherford all the way to the summit. More than likely though, I won't be returning to Humphrey until next year.
