2nd worst hiking experience I recall to date.

Driving in I mentioned to jj there seemed to be a lot more snow than usual for June. Passed a young couple from NY a couple miles up. Figured they were about at their turnaround point based on everything @Tough_boots has taught me about being judgmental

2009-05-31 we turned around at the turn up to Weatherford. Not sure if that sign was visible today, it looked like an eight foot wall of snow. Instead of messing with the switchbacks we decided to head straight up.

Some unpleasant postholing. Most know I detest snow. Generally refuse to lead as I prefer to go at the pace of others. Somehow I was in the lead up snow, who wrote this book? When we hit the stump switchback I thought... maybe Bob and Jim aren't totally nuts, kinna cool cutting straight up.

The Z switch on Weatherford is among my favorite stretches of trail. Even better today as the warm rock felt great. The standard snow patch near 12k seemed three times bigger than normal so it was probably just a little worse.

Asked a couple hikers on route to the summit and back about the more popular summit trail. All said it's fine, no wincing noted.

We passed the NY couple as they'd just crossed the snow patch. I was shocked to see 'em but as jj said they were probably more shocked to see us. They said they followed the trail best they could coming up.

Back to the stump switchback we had a decision. Down the way we came or attempt the trail. I was 70/30 leaning towards the devil we knew. JJ was interested in the trail and it would be good to check out for an upcoming hike.

This turned out to be bad. I imagine with snowshoes it would be fun. Unprepared, numb below the knees for hours had me concerned. We saw the NY tracks but I don't think they had our advanced taco physiques. Looked like a pair of chickadees skipped along whereas our tracks looked like an elephant got in a fight with a hippopotamus.

This 5.5 hour hike in nice conditions still ranks 7th on my top 20 favorites.
