| no partners | | Met Larry at the Inner Basin trailhead, and started around 7:30. There were quite a few people on the trail, even that early. The weather all the way to the top was perfect, even at the summit it was great--nice temps, no wind. The last mile to the top from the saddle was super crowded. Constant flow of people the entire way, luckily everyone was in a great mood.
On the way back down, we'd walked less than half a mile when the weather went from perfect to the complete opposite. It started raining/hailing, which I don't mind, then turned stormy. The lightning was way too close for my comfort. There wasn't much to do besides keep moving, so that's what we did. The rain & hail lasted for close to two hours on our way back down. Most of the lightning seemed to be centered around Agassiz, so once we got back down to the Inner Basin trail, the lightning was no longer much of a concern. With a couple miles left to go, the storm moved on and it got sunny again.
Larry wasn't feeling well the last few miles, so we took those kind of slow on the way back down. Once we got back to the cars, Larry said he was okay to drive, so I left a few minutes ahead of him. My contacts were driving me crazy after wearing them since 3am, so I stopped at the first C-store I saw to buy a bottle of lens solution. I almost always bring my glasses to switch to for the drive back home, but of course I forget to do that today. Very nice hike, got plenty of nice pictures. Aspens are my favorite tree, so I probably went a little overboard with the aspen pics.
One thing I noticed...the mileage from my gps seemed higher than I thought it would be--17.2 miles. Not sure why, or if that's correct. |
