Originally, we had planned to hike Humphreys from the Inner Basin, but JJ & Joe's recent triplogs changed my mind on that plan, so we switched it to the regular summit trail. I had spent the last few weeks jokingly getting Kristen prepped for this hike--she wasn't sure quite what to expect. I think she might have made a will before she flew to Phoenix yesterday. I might have said a few things like "It's kind of a challenge, especially that last mile to the top", "You can hike on low oxygen, right", "I'll find some poles for you so you can drag yourself uphill". Hey, better to have her over-prepared than under.
We woke up early and drove up, starting around 7:30. The weather was cool, but felt great, some clouds and a little breezy. At the start, I had said that I'd never done this hike without seeing at least one person fall near the top. Kristen seemed thrilled. Sure enough, on our way up, we saw two people coming down with bloody legs. We took a quick break near the saddle then kept heading up. The wind was picking up, and the last quarter mile was VERY windy. We got to the top, had lunch, took some pictures, then headed back down.
In the first half mile, we saw three women fall. The first two were fine, but the third lady took quite a tumble. Her right leg was definitely in pain. She asked if we had a first aid kit; I sort of paused because I actually have nothing useful in my so-called first aid kit, maybe I could offer her a cough drop or a disposable toothbrush, but that's about it. She pulled up her pant leg and said her knee was hurting. I said she could have my knee brace, but there wasn't anything else I could offer her. She seemed grateful for the brace, so I took mine off and gave it to her. Some other hikers walked by and had some bandages for her, so we kept going.
The rest of the trip down was uneventful. We stopped once to pull off sweaters and hats as the weather warmed up, but made it back to the cars fairly quickly. Great day, great weather, and my sister finally got to hike Humphreys. She said it was easier than she thought it would be, so that was good. |
