| no partners | | Took the long drive up to PFNP, one of my favorite places.
Puerco Pueblo is a popular stop along the road. There are walking paths through this 100+ room ruin which was probably the largest habitation site in the area 700+ years ago. Though the Park Service requires visitors to stay on the paved paths at the ruin it is OK to walk into the back country via some of the nearby service roads.
No surprise that the many inhabitants of Puerco left their mark in the surrounding areas and I first walked the eastern mesa edge finding enough petroglyphs to make it interesting.
I took advantage of the park resources and went to the Northern Visitor Center for lunch...a nice option not usually available on a day hike. Then I returned to Puerco and walked the service road on the other side of the mesa toward Newspaper Rock. Very nice petroglyphs along here and easily accessible. Eventually an "area closed" sign is reached [ photo ] (I'm not the first HAZzer to be there) but by then you've seen plenty.

So far it's always been worth the drive from Phoenix.... |
