| partners | | Mike and Ali joined me for some looking around on the north edge of Baby Canyon on Perry Mesa. We'd all been there a couple times before but today we were taking advantage of the recent Brooklyn fire which took out most of the grass and made ancient surface features more visible.
We started by visiting a small ruin I'd stumbled on last weekend. A leveled area, a rockpile from collapsed walls, pottery pieces, a grinding area, and a few petroglyphs were all present. This ruin is a few hundred yards away from the canyon edge and is easy to miss when the normal ground cover is there. But that was the theme of the day: finding things normally hidden many of them "inland" from the canyon edge.
We were surprised that many of the smallish rocks scattered on the mesa top were decorated though most of these petroglyphs were old and unimpressive. Also we found 4 or 5 more mainly single-room ruins on the flats distinguished by their rock perimeters, pottery, grinding features etc.
We finished by passing by a couple more substantial cliff edge ruins we'd been too before. Nice day - decent breeze as usual made it just fine. |
