Was hoping to find some interesting stuff (petroglyphs, grinding holes, etc.) at a pool I noticed in the satellite view not far from the ruin, and because the random stroll last time was reasonably productive maybe today's would be too.
Well even at the higher altitude with a 70deg start I was sweating pretty good in a half and hour (humidity) but though the skies turned dark gray during the day I was lucky to avoid rain on the mesa because a muddy drive out would have been ugly.
Anyway the pool itself was very impressive - permanent water around there is rare - but I found just a few faint petroglyphs. I passed through the large ruin area and continued along walking the mesa edge looking for more ancient signs.
The results were a little disappointing: random pieces of pottery are common but there weren't many concentrations which would indicate a habitation site. I had some hopes that the several corners of the mesa I hit might have petroglyphs. The first two did not but the last one, which is roughly right in the middle between Grapevine and two other prominent ruins, was decorated. Unfortunately these glyphs were faded, spalled, and not so impressive.
Still I was glad to get out for some exercise and enjoyed the downpours on the drive home. |
