| no partners | | Took Rivas Canyon Trail up to the top of Chautauqua to the Goat Peak trail. It was warm and overcast. Trail was a bit more overgrown than last month, but still very passable. It was much easier the second time up to Goat Peak knowing how far it was. This time I knew to avoid the steep climb to the very first hill along the ridge that I did last time because you have a steep climb back down the other side to meet up with the main trail. I didn't meet anyone else on the hike to the Peak which was nice. But a group of five or six people got to the top right after me and spoiled my solitude. On the way down near the bottom I tried the trail that branches off to the right. It looked like it might be a nice trail that just heads higher up Temescal Canyon, but it turned out to be a very steep short cut that wasn't much fun. The side trail ended up just below the debris dam at some stairs made of round tree trunk slices that looked very cool. Now that I know where that side trail goes I'll avoid it in the future.
I really like the trail to Goat Peak. It has more elevation gain than the very crowded Temescal Ridge Trail. From the Temescal Gateway trailhead it's only about a two mile hike each way which is great when you don't have a lot of time but want to get some elevation and enjoy a nice view. I really need to write a description for this one when I have a little time. |
