| no partners | | Finally got around to this one on my wish list. When I arrived at Lost Dutchman Park entrance the ranger collecting parking fees asked if I had done the hike before. I said no and she warned me that it is strenuous. She also pulled out a tablet and showed me some photos of key points on the trail which was very helpful. She told me to be sure and stay in the boulder chute all the way to the top and not be tempted by side trails to the right of the chute. Good advice. That I didn't follow completely and ended up having to tackle some steep and some scree that weren't much fun. There was at least one other group doing the same even farther from the chute than I was, so I took some consolation that I wasn't the only fool. After a while I remembered the ranger's advice and headed back to the main boulder chute which was much easier. The other guys stuck with their route and made it up ahead of me anyway.
My main impression from the hike up was that it seemed endless. Flatiron got closer over time, but way too slowly. It was like the stairmaster from hell. But the view is awesome at the top. Well worth the climb. |

Wildflowers Observation Substantial Lots of yellow everywhere, mostly brittlebush, and some of them past their prime. A few other flowers around the trail too. |
