My hiking buddy and I parked at the Hunter Trail lot and took Hunter to the top, descended via Sunset Vista trail, and followed the road back to the car to close the loop. The air was cool, but most of the trail was sheltered from the wind and it felt warm in the sun. There were a few exposed spots along the trail where the wind picked up and it felt quite cool. But at the top the breeze was very light and pleasant. Not very many people on the trail which was nice. This is my second time on Picacho and I forgot how crazy steep it is on the mountain. The level part of Sunset Vista was very wAelcomd after all the steep up and down, and the Saguaro forest on the West side of Picacho is beautiful. Another great day of hiking.
Note that the GPS position in the route that I posted is way off for places where the trail hugs the mountain. Specifically where the Hunter trail hugs the cliff and along the wire ropes in the descent right after the saddle. |
