I was planning to take a quick hike up the Pyramid Trail and get to the top in time to watch the sun set. But I lost track of the time and got a late start. I got to the trailhead just a few minutes before sunset. The trail was in shadow from the start, but it was still bright out at the beginning. I saw a little reddish-orange snake a few minutes into the hike and this time I managed to get a picture. By the time I made it to the top of the hill it was getting pretty dark. I snapped a couple quick pictures, strapped on the headlamp, and hightailed it back down. There was just a new moon which didn't make much light, so I had to use the headlamp to see anything. It was a little spooky with the sound of coyotes and owls. Also the headlamp gives tunnel vision restricted to just where it is shining, and the little grasshoppers that were easy to ignore in daylight made shadows that constantly streaked back and forth through my light beam. After endless switch backs I was very happy to get back to level ground where I could relax and not worry about falling to my death. A few minutes out from the trailhead I passed another hiker with a flashlight going the opposite direction. It was a woman and she said that she was glad to see that she wasn't the only crazy person out on the trail. Night hiking is fun!
