At the junction with the Backbone trail I turned left and continued North. This was my first time on this section of the Backbone, and it was a nice walk. Much easier than the ridge line trail I came from. Eventually the trail turned westward toward the Hub Junction. Luckily there was a trail sign because the trail goes exactly away from the Hub and goes around a hill. Just before getting to the Temescal fire road it goes past Temescal Peak. I followed the overgrown path to the top where I rested and took a couple pictures. On my way back to the trail I was startled by a very pissed off rattlesnake in the underbrush. I thought about waiting him out, but he wasn't going anywhere and there was no way around him. I back tracked up towards the peak and found a way down that wasn't too impossible, but required a fair amount of bush whacking. I had no idea where I was going and I was poking every bush with my trekking poles to alert any nearby snakes. Then I saw two people walking the main trail right in front of me and I made it out. Long walk back from there and my legs were feeling it. A great day. |
