The trail from the rim to Knoll lake is a leisurely stroll compared to the climb up. Knoll lake is a good place to take a break it was 77 degrees at 9:30 in the morning. The walk along the rim road to Horton Creek Trail had good views from the rim to the Southwest of the Mazatzal and four Peaks (a little bit hazy though). The Horton creek trail was more of a controlled fall than a trail. I normally prefer to go up steep climbs but in this case, with the heat, I was glad to be going down. Since I was alone I did this really slow so as not to have any mishaps (only had one minor one at which time I reminded myself to be really cautious). My GPS route goes off trail in one section because I didn't stay on the ridge and wasn't checking my GPS often enough (there are a lot of side trails that either game or hikers have taken that tempt you off trail). You can tell when you are getting close to Horton Spring because you can hear the water. From Horton Spring to Tonto Creek along the Highline trail was a piece of cake. There were Dew Berries along the trail in Dick Williams Creek but they were a little dry (like the Creek), still tasted pretty good though. There weren't too many people on the trail for a 4th of July weekend. I was planning the Promontory Trail to the See Trail Loop tomorrow, but with the heat I decided to not do any more Highline to rim hikes. |
