My plan was to hike from Tonto Creek west along the Highline Trail to Ellison Creek where the trail was closed due to the fire of a week or so ago. I don't know what was wrong but I was totally drained and turned around after Robert's Mesa. I had some minor problems on following this trail. My GPS was loaded with what I later found out was the old Highline Trail. At the creek just West of the Zane Grey Cabin there is a new trail that I followed. The old trail crossed the creek while the new one goes further up stream and crosses. I followed the new trail until I lost it in the rocks west of the creek and proceeded to where the GPS said the trail was. I was now on the old trail. The old trail crosses the next creek doing the same thing, down and back up the other side of the creek. Once on the other side of the creek I noticed a nice trail that headed more upstream. On the return trip I took this trail and it crosses the creek further up stream. I followed the new trail back but lost it in the rocks so I just headed to where my GPS said the trail was. It wasn't til I got home and figured out where the new trail goes (Now that I totally confused everyone). The new trail is about a half mile longer but is more bike friendly. If I can figure out how to post it and link it to this trip I will post a second GPS route of the new trail with a section I added that shows the connection I missed (It is a little more visible on google earth). Overall this was a very nice trail and if you are around in a million years this area will be the new Oak Creek canyon, the rocks you are walking on will be the tops of the rock spires like along the hangover trail.
