Most hiking holds my interest to some degree. Autumn foliage is my favorite. Check the alarm twice. Actually prepare for a change... yeah right.
From the Hatchery TH, East 4 mile on Highline Trail #31
This is a good forest stretch of better than average tread. A mile or so was grass no higher than knee level. I was granted the honors of leading through the dew laden blades of joy, breaking spiderwebs on occasion.
Up Horton Spring Trail #292. Still no signage for this trail down near the springs. The first few minutes up have you wondering if you're on trail. Seemed like a solid yes fifty? yards up. Little sucker trails got me several times. All were easy to correct up to the left if they didn't rejoin.
As expected the forecasted wind picked up a touch when we reached the top of the rim. Met a group of friendly hunters that warned us of bear activity in the area.
I pieced together a loop from routes posted by Chums & MountainMatt. We explored Turkey Beaver Ridge with a side trip out to the ol' dodge truck. Lunched just before getting back up on the ridge. As a kid we'd play get lost in the tunnels through the hay. Lunch was a mayonnaise sandwich. Curb your jealousy. Modified the ten second, two step concoction to a honey sandwich.
Within a couple miles I entered a waypoint Lots of bear evidence. Minutes later Bruce saw something and signaled back for me to hold up. Turned out he had 2 bears in view. I got a glimpse of 1. Maybe ten minutes later I'm looking eye to eye with another cute fur ball twenty yards behind Bruce. Minutes later a little one darted across the terrain. Then the fifth. This was a respectable sized bear. The wind was our blind. We watched 'em mossy about for minutes before the biggen figured us out. I was ready to trip Bruce and run, but like the others they had no interest in us.
Nothing mesmerizing colorwise on the balance. Just delightful areas. We got lucky and crossed paths with @Digital_Sherpa
After a short chat with the legend we finished the loop down Babe Haught.
Synopsis
Probably in the future Autumn mix! |

Autumn Foliage Observation Substantial A good week from prime. Lots of green maples dot the terrain. If you don't survive by others liking your photos you'll probably make out like a bandit all month. |
