| no partners | | I had been on the Babe Haught Trail to Knoll Lake, and had been on the Horton Springs Trail, but I had never done this loop so I decided to give it a shot. I did the loop clockwise: I started at the Fish Hatchery, and went up to the Rim on Babe Haught Trail #143. I crossed the Rim Road and took Babe Haught Trail #88 to Knoll Lake (I am not sure why the number of the Babe Haught Trail changes when you cross the Rim Road). Once at Knoll Lake, I reversed course back to the Rim Road on Babe Haught Trail #88. Then I went E/SE on the Rim Road for 3 miles to the Horton Springs Trail. Then I took the Horton Springs Trail down to Horton Springs. Lastly, I took the Highline Trail west back to the Fish Hatchery to complete the loop.
The Babe Haught Trail is a good one to hike on, especially the section between the Rim Road and Knoll Lake. The water level at Knoll Lake was really low -- even lower than it was when I was there back in April. The hike on the Rim Road was pretty boring, which put a bit of a damper on the hike. Going down the Horton Springs Trail was basically akin to an off-trail scramble. I had been up this trail a couple of times, but this was my first descent on the trail. I had a lot of difficulty following the trail, but I managed to make it down to Horton Springs. The Highline Trail was OK, but there are other sections of the Highline Trail that I like better.
I saw a squirrel and a blue jay, but other than that I saw no wildlife. There were 2 people at Horton Springs, but I saw no other hikers all day.
This hike goes through 3 National Forests: Tonto, Coconino, and Apache-Sitgreaves
I always enjoy hiking in the Rim Country, but there are other hikes on the Rim that I like better than this one.
