The direct sun exposure was not Rosie's favorite part so we took breathers in the shade throughout the day. At Bonita Creek we followed the recently cleared trail to the spring and topped off our water supply while briefly snacking. Truly one of my favorite areas on the rim. We spooked a lone whitetail on our return to Highline. The rest of the trek was uneventful. Enjoyed the rim views and patches of fall colors. Route finding gets interesting around the Pyle Ranch area but any fears of losing the trail can be put to rest now. Even through the chest - high grass areas there is still a trail, numerous cairns, white diamonds, ribbons and pieces of reflective tape wrapped around manzanita branches. The ferns that dominate around Ellison Creek have all died down, making route finding easier through there. Rosie had plenty of interaction with cattle today, but behaved. We spooked a bull elk and watched as it ran to sanctuary atop Roberts Mesa. Shortly after, we encounter a young man out hunting, followed by his grandfather near the Hatchery TH. This was the only human contact all day. Hiking this stretch seemed more scenic going east than it did west. Only downside is saving the rocky stuff for the end when feet/legs are tired. Overall, a very enjoyable day on the rim. Stats include several small side trips for photo ops and finding water for the pooch. |
