Getting down into Dane is pretty straight forward. The first few hundred meters are a little dull, but once you enter the confluence with Barbershop it quickly becomes clear that this is a rewarding hike through a unique part of the Rim.
Dane Canyon had a trickle of water flow and multiple pools. Barbershop was flowing well. The sound of the water was mesmerizing. There are few things that calm the desert soul like a steady sandstone stream.
In Barbershop, there are clear game trails that stop and start along the banks. Bushwhacking is fairly minimal. However, there are still a couple mandatory crossings. Exiting Barbershop was a little steep, but I had identified a break in the Coconino Sandstone as my exit route and I stuck with it. The first 350ft of climbing was the most challenging. The incline soon relented, and I enjoyed the views over the canyon.
Another item to note, FR321 has recently been graded and was in pretty good condition (still some sharp rocks in the middle of the road). |
