There was supposed to be a guided hike Saturday at 3 but I was the only one who showed up so I told Ranger Kevin I would take the route on my own.
It was BUGGGGGGGY, yikes. By the time I was done I had itched my nose to the point I was worried it would be red.... but it wasn't. Normally when I do the Metate, I go back on the Metate but the bugs drove me up on to the Spur Cross for the return. I hadn't been up on that part of the trail since May of '06 so it was kind of like going on a new trail. I had forgotten how wide an expanse of a dry was bed crossing there was before going back up the little hill to the trailhead.

There were a few hikers out with their dogs and families. The heat wasn't bad and there was a bit of breeze now and again. Cave Creek is definitely starting to shrink and the algae is taking over in some spots; although from a distance, it doesn't look so bad.

The tadpoles (in the creek just west of the trailhead on the Metate) have grown in the last couple weeks. I don't know when they turn into frogs (and you all thot it was frogs that turned into princes, ha!) but perhaps next week (there is guided hike: Cacti of Spur Cross at 8AM next Sunday), I can get the answer to that question. Ranger Kevin shared a little of the story with one of the young hikers yesterday. These frogs eventually go out and bury themselves in the dirt and I think they don't come out except when it rains or something.

There were some moderate splashes of wildflowers and buckhorn cactus blooming but the main cactus blooming show has not started yet. There were quite a few butterflies and lizards and hummingbirds too. There were LOTS of wolfberry bushes with a full array of wonderful berries.

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
