My main objective for the day was to obtain a visitor pass for access to Fort Huachuca. Next I wanted to finally hike Hunter Canyon Trail #111. I have walked by its northern terminus in Miller Canyon countless times and wondered about it. Parked at the trailhead (FR 4786), just a short ways from the main Hunter Canyon Road (FR 367). The trail gradient starts out mellow as it meanders at times along an old road and in and out of the drainage. Then the steepness picks up and maintains until you reach the divide between Hunter and Miller Canyons. From there it is a relatively short drop down to the Miller Creek crossing and the junction with Miller Canyon Trail #106.
After looking around a bit in Miller Canyon it was time to head back. Along the way I walked over to the remains of the Armistice Mine, but didn't do any exploring since it was late in the day. It turned out to be a fun little hike that gave me some different perspectives of familiar landmarks. |
