I had never been to the cave, though had hiked the trail from Carney to the saddle and beyond three other times in the past. I got about 3/4 of the way there, but couldn't keep up with the pace of the group and told Letlet to go on without me. Not a problem, as I was just enjoying being out there. I went back to the parking lot and hung out with non-hiker David, as we waited for the group to return. I found out that when you get a good number of people up in there, the voices really carry down the canyon.
Following the hike I checked out some new roads on the way back to Coolidge and I-10 at Picacho. Specifically, I drove down Ironwood Road from Apache Junction and down to Queen Creek to Hunt Highway through the newer Anthem area. Wow, there is a lot of new development happening there! One of goals for the day was to stop at The Pork Shop in Queen Creek. Never had been there, but all I can say is that you are a pork/bacon lover, that place is for you. Also, when I read their history I was intrigued by the owners name: Combs. I talked with Greg Combs the owner, and let him know that way back in 1960 or 1961 when I was a student at Loma Linda Elementary School in Phoenix one of my teachers was Mrs. Combs (don't remember her first name), who had to be a relative. She set up a field trip to the family farm, which had to have been the homestead, as I remember it being a long school bus ride and really fun. Back in those days there was nothing much out there except for scattered farms and ranches. My how it has all changed! |
