| no partners | | I had not been down to Madera Canyon since June 2016, so a visit was overdue! I usually go during the "leafy" time of the year, so seeing it in the more barren look of winter was interesting. Parked at Whitehouse Picnic Area and hiked down to the waterfall area by Proctor Road and back. There was good flow in the creek thanks to our recent generous storms. On my way back I encountered a group of bird watchers along the trail just north of the bat houses. They had a spotting scope set up, so I eased up to them and asked what the attraction was. It was a male Elegant Trogon, who was being very cooperative and allowing good looks and photos. I got to see it when pointed out to me, but the real treat was seeing it through the scope. Beautiful! Unfortunately, when I finally got a chance at a clear photo, my camera had turned off and by the time I got it ready again, the bird had moved. Typical. Nevertheless, that was pretty special and made my day! |
