| no partners | | It is good to have goals. So far I am doing pretty well on some of them. Saturday drive over and an area I had sort of put on the shelf I moved up to the top and I am glad I did. Drive up to a major old mining area. I parked and just walked around. A nice rock house still standing, with nice window details. Many shafts and adits, most of those had small fallen down rock buildings near them. A headframe and chute still up. I was not impressed with the ore, the silver and gold mine waste rock is pretty ugly. Then I got onto a waste pile that had lots of pretties, and I was happy. I was intrigued by a nearby mountain, but looked technical to get up. Will check closer another time.
Drive out and then on to another area of a large mine. This one was mostly reclaimed, but some walking on an old undriven mining road revealed some open adits, home to Javelina, and many many nasty deep shafts concealed in brush. Maybe as many as 15-20.
I then sought out a camp on a faded probably ranch road. I saw some cliff faces in the waning light and decided on that for an off trail hike on Sun.
Good night in the back of the Toyota, glad I was inside because of the wind. I was up and out early, and walked the ranch road a short distance then took off for the route to a rocky band of cliffs, broken by steep alluvial ramps that I figured I could manage. It was a bit of roller coaster up and down, then I mounted a slope and aimed for a break. It went pretty well although on the final got pretty steep and I had a short face traverse I didn't like to avoid some very slippery fine talus. Got on top and great views, walked what I could and realized a full ridgeline traverse I just was not interested in due to some probable climbing. I took a slightly different route down, a little risky, but worked out even better and I did not fall once! Wind was cool to cold and I kept my hoody on the entire time so this was a good day for this.
On the drive out had some train spotting at Steins. This was a nice trip and I think I will come back, maybe from the Arizona side also, depending on weather and what else I have going on. |
