| no partners | | I hadn't done the Y Bar Trail recently, if ever. Prior to my hike on Sunday, I didn't think that I had ever done it, but as I hiked it, some of it looked familiar, so maybe I did hike it at some point in the past. If I had hiked it prior to Sunday, it would have been back in 2001 or 2002, so it's been a while.
Anyway, it's a nice hike! Much of it is in the trees, so you don't have expansive views for all of it, but there are some open sections which have truly excellent views.
I hiked out a little over four miles and turned around at the ridge / saddle that separates Shake Tree Canyon from Y Bar Basin. I would have liked to go on, but I got a late start and did not want to run out of daylight.
The trail is in pretty good condition and appears to have been pruned recently. It is steep and rocky, but that just makes it all the more fun. There was only very minor bushwacking on the day that I did it, most of which is easily avoidable. Higher up, there are a few fallen trees that cross the trail, but these are easily crossed.
I had sort of expected to see no one else, but I came across two groups of two who were on their way down as I was working my way upward. I startled a largish animal on the way down, but only caught a brief glimpse of it. I don't know what it was, but it sure did make a lot of noise pushing it's way through the brush and manzanitas. |
