| no partners | | An evening hike in MMRP...
Starting from the Four Peaks / Horse Staging Area, I hiked Shallmo Wash, Pemberton, Scenic (the long way - along the ridgeline), Cinch, and Escondido.
When I started, I saw a number of mountain bikers getting ready for their evening rides. I encountered several riders as I started hiking north on Shallmo Wash, but once I hit Pemberton, I didn't see anyone else on my entire hike (which is how I like it).
I managed to hold off turning on my headlamp until a least a mile into the Scenic Trail - I finally turned it on when I hit a downhill rocky section. As I proceeded along the ridgeline of the Scenic Trail, I saw an orange reflection ahead of me. I approached, thinking that it might be a broken piece of a bicycle pedal reflector, but I was wrong - it was the eye of a bird, which had settled down for the night along the trail. It took off when I was just a few feet away. As I proceeded, I saw several other birds too. I think they might have been quail, but it was too dark for a firm identification.
When I got to the final downhill of the Scenic Trail, I saw a small tarantula near the top of the hill. |
