| no partners | | After an overnight campout near Forest Lakes, we took an afternoon hike up Horton Creek. As anticipated, there were quite a few people on the trail. However, since we started in the afternoon, most were headed down while we were headed up.
We mostly stayed near the creek and eventually just committed to hiking up the creek itself. We took our time and had fun playing in the pools and checking out the multitude of cascades. I marked several good camping spots on the track.
Once we made it to the spring, we had it to ourselves.
Decided to take the Highline/Derrick trails on the return trip. I didn't anticipate the up and down buttkickers along Highline for those first couple of miles. Ran into a trail runner who had already put in 17 miles after getting a bit lost. She was trying to get back to the See Canyon TH. I showed her where we were and where See Canyon was on the topo map. Figured she had another 7-8 miles. She seemed in good spirits and well fueled--hoped to make it back before dark.
We enjoyed the more open views on the Highline, though the bottom couple miles of Derrick are, in my view, pretty blah ....
All in all, a great day of hiking in perfect conditions. |
