1st trip
This was a fun way to shake up an old favorite, and skip the crowds on the ascent to 5024 and Flatiron.

I took the Prospector Trail to Praying Hands approach, and had downloaded one of the previous routes on Route Scout. Still, I think I would have benefited from reviewing prior triplogs a little more closely. In particular, I overshot the "left turn" out of the drainage and up the ridge that leads up to the Superstition Ridgeline. As a result, I climbed around on the opposite side of the approach ridge (which has a lot more vegetation, making cross-country travel more challenging), before finally crossing over and making my way up towards the "goal posts."

Cairns here and there were mildly useful, but given the off-trail nature of the climb and the fact that various cairn-setters have their own views on which route is better, at some point, you just pick your own line and head "up."

My one piece of advice relates to the final summit of 5024 after you reach the ridgeline, where the "preacher" and "congregation" hoodoos are present. From there, it's not clear whether a direct assault on the westerly hoodoos is better than trying to skirt them to the south. I took the direct-assault approach, only to find that I could have saved a fair amount of energy by just rounding the south side of the hoodoo collection and finding a relatively unobstructed path to the summit.

Despite the Saturday crowds on Flatiron, I had 5024 all to myself.

I joined the masses on a jaunt to the Flatiron proper and then descended the traditional route, with the traditional crowds.

The day turned out to be perfect for hiking. Moderate temps; cloud cover the whole time. It sprinkled lightly on the descent and turned to a drizzle on my drive back home.

Enjoyed this one. A great workout, especially that 4th mile, which alone is responsible for nearly half the elevation gain!
