| no partners | | I set out Sunday to have a look around our "green borderlands." Late summer, after a couple months of monsoon rains, transforms much of the higher sections the Southern Arizona desert into a green wonderland. This is my favorite time of the year! Of course there are a few hazards to deal with during this period, such as thunderstorms, flooded roads, high humidity, and insect nuisances. But everything is so alive and vibrant, which makes it hard to resist. 
I had some ideas of where I might go, and wanted to camp somewhere for the night. I thought maybe Parker Canyon Lake would be a good choice. Started out by heading down to Green Valley, then spent time working my way through Box Canyon. Everything was just as beautiful as I expected.  When I got to Sonoita, I changed my mind about heading to Parker Canyon Lake, and decided on going down to Nogales and back north on I-19 instead. The main reason was that I wanted to stop for a meal at Dos! in Tubac, and check out their expanded dining area. Had I gone on to the lake that wouldn't have been possible, so I decided that a night in Madera Canyon would work just fine.
Wandering around in the wet grasses, etc. in Box Canyon meant I might make "friends" with some tiny arachnids that hang out in those environments, and sure enough, 6 days later I am still dealing occasional reminders of the encounters. Of course I am speaking of harvest mites, red bugs, or chiggers, depending on what you want to call them. Trombicula alfreddugesi to be specific. (I'll take stinging nettles over these guys any day  )
