Take SR 37 until you reach the turnoff for FR 107 (Bonito Lake Road), at the curve where SR 37 turns north toward Nogal. FR 107 is usually in good condition and can be navigated with any vehicle. Past the lake and turnoff to South Fork it continues on to an area of buildings at Runnels Bonito Stables. At this point a road heads south and crosses the creek. That is not the one you want. Continue west through the stables area instead. Once a short ways beyond the stables it enters the area of dispersed camping opportunities, which continues to the end of the road at the Argentina Canyon trail head. It is obvious why this is such a popular area: easy access for RVs, many camp sites near the running stream, rest rooms scattered about, and it is one of the main gateways to the Sierra Blanca/White Mountain Wilderness and its excellent system of trails. Plus, it is down in the trees with plenty of shade.
Earlier this summer when I was in the Cloudcroft area, I stopped at the Sacramento Ranger District Station there and found a good book on the hiking trails: "Trail Guide Lincoln National Forest - Sacramento Ranger District" by Lynn A. Melton. There are three books in the series, covering Smokey Bear, Sacramento, and Guadalupe districts. They contain very good information and are pretty up to date. I picked up the Smokey Bear District book at the Ruidoso Ranger Station. There is a companion website for the books as well: lincoln-nf-trails.org.
Both the Cloudcroft and Ruidoso ranger stations have some printed handouts about trails, camping, etc that are available out front so you can get info if they are closed, which is nice. |
