I was hoping to hit some part of the ridgeline today. I opted for the route via Hieroglyphics Canyon because I figured it wouldn't be busy and I like the trail once you're past the viewing area. Mostly, though, I wanted to do something hard with good views at the top. This fit the bill in every respect.
I've done this hike once before. The lead in trail up to the glyphs used to be an old road laden with ankle buster rocks. No more. A very nice reroute was added since I was here last. It's nice enough that my wife might like this hike (up to the glyphs, anyway) over her favorite Lost Dutchman loop. Probably not, but I can wish.
The trail beyond the glyphs is better than I remember too. You'll likely have it all to yourself; I saw 3 other hikers after the glyphs. Strenuous in spots, but well marked, pruned where needed and easy to follow.
The prize today was the saddle. I debated going to the peak, but my new norm seems to be 6 miles, so I stopped at the saddle for a nice break and enjoyed the tremendous views while a nice breeze washed over me. Perfect.
This was a most enjoyable hike on a gorgeous day in paradise! |
