| no partners | | I was looking for a Black Friday hike to do and decided to go hike Bear-Doe in Sedona: Bear Mountain and Doe Mountain. I had previously done each of these hikes separately, but had never done them both in the same day. It is easy enough to do both, since the two trails both start from the same parking lot.
We did Bear first, and it is a really nice but strenuous hike -- much more strenuous than the distance and elevation gain would suggest. The first time that I did the hike, once on Bear Mountain I stopped at the sign that said "End of Trail", thinking that I was at the summit. But subsequent research revealed that the sign is at 6,470', and .4 mile to the NW is a higher point at 6,506'. So we did an off-trail bushwhack to the "true" summit. The bushwhack wasn't bad, although there was some scrub oak, manzanita, prickly pear, yucca, agave, and other assorted pleasantries to deal with.
My GPS recorded the 6,506 mark in the vicinity of N34.91906 W111.88409. I never did see a survey marker, summit cairn, or summit logbook though.
After getting back to the parking lot, we made the relatively easy climb up to Doe Mountain. While on top we ventured over to the high point on Doe as well.
If you ever have friends and relatives from out-of-town who aren't really hikers but who want to see Sedona, Doe Mountain is a good place to take them. It is a mesa, and it is almost flat as a pancake on top. You can walk along the edge of the mesa and see many of the landmarks that Sedona is known for -- it is basically like Sedona 101.
