During our stay at the cabin in Nutrioso, we decided on a trip to West Baldy Trail. Snowfall's been patchy and light around Nutrioso, but didn't really know how things would look 45 minutes away at Baldy. The parking lot was a total white out. Snow was about 5 inches deep. Just made up a parking spot and started hiking. There was one other car at the trailhead. The trail had been traveled enough that it made the route finding easy from trail marker to trail marker. We just followed footsteps. Depending upon where we were at, our footsteps were sinking anywhere from an inch to 8 inches deep. There were only a few patches of land without snow along the hike. 95% of the route was covered in white stuff.

My daughter and I were the adventurers, sometimes straying off trail to take a closer look at the creek to our left. We usually found ourselves shin deep in snow during our off trail explorations. For a snow hike, the conditions were ideal. The trail was worn enough to make walking fairly easy. I wore snow boots, which kept my feet dry even in the deep stuff. Everyone else in the group was wearing either hiking boots or sneakers. No complaints from anyone about cold or wet feet.

The weather was mostly sunny, no wind, and temps around 50 degrees. I almost immediately dumped my long sleeve sweatshirt and hiked the rest of the day in a short-sleeve t-shirt. Beautiful scenery along the way. We turned around somewhere around 1.5 to 2 miles in. I'm not sure exactly, so listing our total travel distance at 4 miles considering some of the extra off-trail exploration.
