Definitely one of the most challenging hikes I have done thus far. And it was the first time for all three of us from HAZ to go out hiking with someone else off of HAZ! Made a trip like this much more fun, and palatable. Thanks for the great company, guys. :)

A few interesting finds on the way...along the Boulder Canyon riverbed we found a snake (not sure yet what it was, but picture is here), a frog and a centipede.

Our hike ended up being a little bit longer, as in retrospect I see we followed Smorgasborg's GPS route, which he clocked at 12 1/4 miles roundtrip. The added mile came from summiting on the far south end and hiking the full ridge to the peak on the north end.

As for the exposure, there were a few places I took a little gasp. In one place, the ledge we walked across was only a foot wide with steep dropoffs on either side. Nice and exhilarating!

We took with us also an older friend of mine who is a veteran hiker, but this one was a bit too much for him by his own admission. He made it up the slope of the south ridge, but could handle the climbing to the top. He found a nice shady spot and waited for us as we made it onto the ridgeline and then made our way north to the peak. On the way back the heat was coming on, and it made very slow going for him, but he made it! : app :

Heed what people are saying about water...this was the first time since my initial Arizona hike back in 1996 that I actually ran out of water. Had a full water bladder (good size), but it still wasn't enough. Be prepared!
