| no partners | | Didn't go as far as the corral, but at a fork about 1/4 mile before the cabin I veered off to the fork on the left and went up to Pine Creek, which had a little bit of water in it, lots of algae (as seen in my attached photoset).
If you take the fork to the left that goes to the creekbed, you can walk down the creekbed a few feet and there is a trail that heads off to the left, and if you follow it enough (about 1 1/3 miles, I'm guessing), you'll end up at the creek. On the way there are a couple of openings in old barbed wire fences, maybe they were build for cattle to go through at one time? On the way back, in that creekbed next to the fork to the cabin, I came up on another gila monster, who didn't seem to care that I was around and snapping a few pictures.
The cabin is a neat place to stop and visit...wish I knew the story of that place. Graffiti in there goes back to 1967, not sure how old it really is. Lots of old twin spring bed frames outside, around the cabin. (Stiller, I'm not sure if the bull carcass you saw five days ago was right next to the cabin...when I got there, all I found were a couple of hooves... Were you the ones so kind as to leave the Arrowhead waters on the cabin picnic table? )
All in all, did 2.55 mi with Pine Creek Loop, 2.2 mi each way from the loop to the intersection that leads to Ballantine cabin, I'm guessing the hike from the intersection to the cabin was probably about 2/3 mi each way, and the turnoff up to Pine Creek I'm guessing was just under 1.5 mi each way, totaling 11 mi.
