| no partners | | This was a hike to the summit of Rucker Peak (elevation of 7,137 feet and prominence of 1,106 feet), which is in the Chiricahua Mountains. Topo maps have the elevation at 7,136 feet, but LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data has the elevation as being a foot higher.
For those that don't know, LiDAR measurements involve an airplane flying over a target area and sending light pulses to the ground. By measuring the time for the pulses to return, and using an accurate elevation of the plane, an elevation of the ground can be calculated. LiDAR is accurate to +/- 4 inches for measured points.
I parked at a small parking area on Rucker Canyon Road, and from there took the Devil's Canyon Trail for about 1 1/2 miles to Bruno Saddle. From there I took Rucker Peak Trail #601 for about a mile to the summit.
I was amazed to find that both trails were very well maintained. I read that some trail work had been done on the Devil's Canyon Trail in June, 2025, and I am guessing that work was done on the Rucker Peak Trail at the same time. I don't think that I have seen trails in the Chiricahuas in such good condition as these 2 trails.
I located the benchmark at the summit and enjoyed some nice views to the east while I ate lunch.
This turned out to be a really nice hike, especially since I did not have to the bushwhacking that I expected to do. Had I known that the trails were in such good condition I would have worn a t-shirt and shorts instead of body armor! |
