Today is Mrs. SloFolks B-Day and this hike was at her request. After the struggle both of us had on Trail 252 yesterday this seemed perfect. Though we've driven by it 100 times neither of us had ever been to the Hassayampa River Preserve. What a surprise. This place is beautiful. A true oasis in the Sonoran Desert. Flowing water, big trees, birds, wildlife, CLEAN bathrooms, this place has it all. Did I mention CLEAN bathrooms? Women seem to put a lot of emphasis on the importance of little things like that. :D

There are six trails on the property, some of them focused on birding, but all were in great shape and very scenic. We did the one trail that had a little elevation first and as soon as we got to the top the thunder and lightning started. It was at this time I second guessed my decision on getting aluminum trekking poles instead of graphite or carbon. :scared: The rain soon followed and we got soaked! Two days ago the humidity was 2% and now it was 90%. Felt good though and the desert sure needs the rain. With everything wet this place reminded me of a place I visited as a youngster many times...Turkey Run State Park in Indiana. The smell was identical. Crap, I'm reminiscing. :(

Mrs. SloFolks wanted just three things for her birthday...(1)See some ruins, CHECK (2)See the river preserve, CHECK
(3)Prime rib dinner, soon to be CHECK, (last year she was craving Waffle House for some reason) for those unfamiliar with Waffle House, just imagine a gas station restroom that serves up waffles. :scared:

Lots of yellow and some orange. Pretty nice considering the location and type of vegetation.
