Plan B was backpacking See Canyon. That one got scrapped after we failed to find a reasonably remote campsite in there.
Plan C was dinner in Young, car camping in Cherry Creek, and exploring some ruins. We achieved dinner but bailed on Cherry Creek due to tire and fuel concerns.
Plan D was car camping by Reynold’s Creek. We executed this plan reasonably well, albeit with prior campers’ trash, the resulting bees, and a flat tire. (On the upside, the flat was confirmation of my Cherry Creek tire concerns.) The leaves were beautiful here.
Plan E was the winner, and it was sweet redemption. Andrew was done with the bees so we risked the dwindling fuel and 4 good tires and drove up toward Center Mountain. While the main overlook spot was taken, the other was open and we didn’t even lose a tire. We basked in the views, enjoyed a warm fire, and woke up to an amazing sunrise from the warmth of the truck.
We completed our impromptu overland loop with a feel-good drive down the 288 and on home through Globe. Sometimes the best adventures are the unexpected ones. |
