| no partners | | Started hiking from the horse trailer lot on First Water Road, the road is in decent shape with only a few deeply eroded spots to slow you down. Greeted by 5 cars in the lot plus 5 horses unloading. Temps felt comfortable all the way due to a fair amount of cloud cover. Passed by 2 hikers on Hackberry Springs Trail on my way to the unexpected solitude in the springs area, crossing the flowing creek ,even to check out the spring , was not too difficult. Surprisingly no water flow from the pipe presumably clogged, didn’t try to probe it. Near the “campsite “ area along the creek the trail is disrupted from flooding so I followed the horse cairns to regain the trail . On the way up to Garden Valley saw a group of 6 or 7 coming down from Hackberry Mesa saw only 2 other hikers this side of Garden Valley. Right now Garden Valley is very muddy, wiser hikers coming from 2nd Water trail were turning around, the mud tried stealing my hiking shoes a couple of times, deep horse hoof post holes that you could turn your ankle on are abundant. Took a break on 2474 by the grinding holes to remove about a pound of mud from each shoe. Followed along the flowing water in the smooth rock of First Water Creek to the old ranch then back up to the parking lot. |
