I hate hiking in pants but the weather today made it mandatory. Arrived at the TH at 11:30 with only 4 cars in the parking lot (seems like the rain and cold kept many away). Started down First Water, passing a small group with a toddler at the Dutchman junction. Made it up to Garden Valley and made a stop at the ruin at the junction. Still tons of sherds everywhere which is a bit surprising with the traffic that goes through the area. Met two guys there who were hiking the Supes for the first time. They were going to hike down Boulder Canyon and back up Black Mesa. They were using All Trails and were unsure if they were going the right way (imagine that ). I told them where to go and warned them that since it was already 12:30 they may not make it out before dark. They did not have a head lamp and did not seem too concerned, hopefully they made it out okay. Garden Valley was a flooded, mud bog. My feet felt like they had 10 pound weights on them with all the mud. Stopped at Hackberry Spring for a quick break and continued on. Tons of water down First Water Creek, which made it a bit slower to navigate but nothing horrible, just a bit slippery due to the mud and sand on my shoes. I took a route I hadn't taken before trying to get some additional mileage in and made it back to my rig at 6.25 miles. A nice and easy one today but it felt good to get back out there after a couple weeks. |
